Dear Orchid Friends:

I'd like to welcome the American Orchid Society to the Web. Their presence will be enjoyed by all.

There are more than 1,000 species of Dendrobium orchids, so their growing requirements are quite diverse. Dendrobiums can be a challenge to grow. It is helpful to know which type dendrobium you have, to provide proper care. Many dendrobiums complete a growth phase and a rest phase during the year, so it is important to water and maintain temperatures to match these phases. This month, I will provide tips for growing dendrobiums.

Dendrobium Culture

Light: Strong light is important. The majority of dendrobiums grow and flower under Cattleya-like light conditions. Inside your home, use an east, shady-south, or west window. Dendrobiums do well outdoors with light shade from midday sun. Less light is needed during their resting stage.

Water: Water well when in active growth cycle. Permit the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Mist those in your home to promote healthy growth. Increase watering in warm, sunny weather. Water enough to keep psuedobulbs from shriveling.

Temperature: Temperature varies widely with type of Dendrobium. Generally:

Days: 60 to 95 degrees F

Nights: 50 to 60 degrees F

Fertilizer: Provide fertilizer on a regular basis. More frequent fertilizing is good under high temperatures. You can use a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer twice a month while new growths are developing. An occasional bloom booster may stimulate flowering. Reduce fertilizer when Dendrobiums are in a resting phase.

Potting: Potting is an important component of growing Dendrobiums. They do best in smaller pots, prefering to be pot-bound. Dedrobiums can also be mounted on cork or tree fern. The potting medium should promote good drainage. Good drainage is important in promoting healthy rooting and so that the medium does not decompose so quickly.

Blooms: Flowers can last one day to many weeks, depending on the type of Dendrobium.

I hope these growing tips will assist you in growing your beautiful orchids. There are differing opinions on growing orchids, but I've found these tips work well for me.

See you next time,
Vivi
