15th World Orchid Conference

Dear Orchid Friends:

Saudacoes!

Oi, que linda! Laelia purpurata, laelia jongheana, cattleya intermedia, miltonia spectabilis, pleurothalis, crytopodium, zygopetalum...

The 15th World Orchid Conference was a spectacular event hosted by the famous city of Rio de Janeiro. September in Brazil brings primavera (Spring) and the Brazilian orchids gave quite a show. It is from Brazil that many interesting species origina te.

The World Orchid conference is held only once every three years - an opportunity for specialists world wide to meet and discuss orchid culture. Participating countries spanned the globe: Brazil, USA, Argentina, Mexico, Uraguay, Paraguay, Thailand, Japan, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Australia... The list is endless.

Brazilian cattleyas, laelias and exotic Brazilian species dominated the exhibition with such an array of colors. Dendrobiums, cymbidiums, paphiopediliums and masdevalias were abundant as well.

Commercial exhibits showcased the regions of Brazil and their culture. Scenes included views of Rio, Corcovado (Christ), Sugarloaf; gauchos (cowboys) from Rio de Sul, tropical gardens, displays of the Amazons. Brazil is such a huge and diverse country wit h an incredible range of topography and climates. It was fascinating to view orchids from the various regions of Brazil and Brazilian growers enticed us with many varieties.

Orchids judged at the World orchid Conference receive some of the most prestigious awards in the world. H. Stern Jewelers donated the orchid conference awards. Grand Champion of the show was awarded to Bi Orchids for Cattley a Nobilior 'Matalia': a 3 flower alba catt; rounded, full, flat petals; meristem. A definite show stopper! R.F. Orchids took Reserve Champion for Vasco. Cynthia Alonso 'Sapphire' AM/AOS: a purple flower on tall infloresce nce; white column with yellow on lip.

Much attention was devoted to the conservation and preservation of rare Brazilian orchids. Many of these species have been destroyed and are nearly extinct due to the destruction of the Rain Forests and Amazons. It was gratifying to see the interest the world has demonstrated in the protection of these magnificent Brazilian species.

Lectures and social functions occurred at the Hotel Gloria, a turn of the century hotel which has been lovingly restored. The speakers list is definitely the "Who's Who" of orchids. Lectures ranged from scientific to horticultural topics to meet in terests of the orchidists present at the conference.

The 15th World Orchid Conference was truly a magnificent sensory delight. For updates and photos, please see Vivi's 15th World Orchid Site.

Ate mais tarde,

Until next time-
