ORCHIDS IN BLOOM

Dear Orchid Friends:

I recently had the pleaasure of attending the Coral Gables Orchid Society Show at the Fairchild Botanical Gardens, Feb 14-16, 1997. It was an intimate and friendly show with a personal atmosphere. This is definitely a show for 'people who enjoy people and orchids'. The Coral Gables Orchid Society Show focuses on individuals and their accomplishments... a refreshing perspective.

"Love in Bloom" was the theme for this year's show. Displays highlighted the astounding personal collections of many amateur orchid growers. It is easy to 'fall in love' with orchids and their beauty. This was a judged show by the American Orchid Society (A.O.S.) Points are awarded to individual plants based on the quality of the orchid flowers. Awards were also given for exhibitions. Cattleyas, paphiopediliums dominated the show along with a wonderul representation of epidendrums and other interesting genera.

First Place 150 sg. ft exhibit went to Orchid World International, with a gorgeous display of magenta cattleyas. OWI also showcased an incredible paphiopedilium: Paph. Deana Nicole 'K-S' Am/AOS: elongated yellow paph with brown stripes and long sepals. Daisy Farms won Second Place 125 sq. ft.exhibit with an impressive display of paphiopediliums.

First Place Table Top Exhibit was awarded to Richard Fulford for his unique collection of orchids blending orange hues to purple hues.

Other Awards:

Kudos to the members of the Coral Gables Orchid Society Show on such a lovely show. The hospitality of Gale Langford, President, Betty Eber, VP, Herb Taylor & George and Mona Hieder added so much warmth to the show with their welcoming demeanor. Thanks for a truly delightful show. I'll definitely see you next year!

Until next time,

Vivi

P.S. Now is a good time to prepare for Spring. Observe your orchids for signs of disease or insects. Take care to avoid spraying fertilizer, insecticide on the flowers to prevent marking the petals. Begin looking at your plants to determine which ones require repotting. Remember to water first prior to fertilizing.
